Redwood Coast and Northern California Jacuzzi Hotels
The Redwood Coast of Northern California — Humboldt County, the Lost Coast, Mendocino County, and the stretch of Highway 101 and Highway 1 that winds through ancient redwood groves and dramatic Pacific bluffs — is one of the least crowded and most visually stunning parts of the state. This is not a region that appears on most California itineraries, which is precisely its appeal. Eureka and Arcata serve as the regional hubs of Humboldt County. Mendocino sits further south along the coast on a headland that looks like it belongs in Ireland, with a small-town character and a surprising density of art galleries, wine tasting rooms, and atmospheric inns. Hotels with private in-room jacuzzis along this stretch of coastline are fewer in number than in Southern California, but the ones that exist offer a setting that is genuinely unlike any other in the state.
The old-growth coastal redwoods of Humboldt County — Redwood National and State Parks, Prairie Creek, and the Avenue of the Giants — are the primary reason most visitors make the journey north. Standing beneath trees that are 300 feet tall and 2,000 years old is a humbling experience that resets perspective quickly. The Lost Coast, accessible by a challenging backcountry route, is one of the most remote coastal areas in the contiguous US. Mendocino’s combination of coastal hiking, whale watching, and wine from the Anderson Valley appellation makes it a stronger all-round leisure destination than the more remote Humboldt areas.
Practical reality for travelers: Northern California’s Redwood Coast is far from any major airport. The nearest significant air service is in Eureka (ACV) from San Francisco, or the long drive up Highway 101 from the Bay Area — roughly four to five hours to Eureka. This is a region for travelers who deliberately seek remoteness and are willing to earn the experience with the drive. For those travelers, a private jacuzzi suite or hot tub room at a Mendocino or Eureka inn is the right kind of reward at the end of a day spent in the redwoods or on a coastal bluff trail.
