Mesa is the third-largest city in Arizona with 520,000 residents, and its hotel market for in-room jacuzzi suites sits between Phoenix pricing and Scottsdale pricing — a useful middle ground for travelers who want East Valley access without Scottsdale rates. The city hosts two Spring Training facilities: Sloan Park (Chicago Cubs) and Hohokam Stadium (historically Cubs and now a shared facility). Spring Training February and March is when Mesa hotel demand peaks significantly. The Marriott Mesa at Wrigleyville West and the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale at Gainey Ranch (which straddles the Scottsdale-Mesa border) are the standout upscale options in the area with suite configurations that include private tubs.
Chandler, south of Mesa, has developed as one of the Phoenix metro’s stronger suburban hotel markets. The Intel and Intel Fab 42 campuses bring significant business travel to the area, and the Chandler Fashion Center and downtown San Marcos hotel corridor have driven leisure development. Gilbert, east of Chandler, has grown from a small farming town to a suburb of 270,000 in about 20 years and now has its own hotel market with mid-range options including some whirlpool suite properties. The Heritage District in downtown Gilbert has a walkable restaurant and bar scene unusual for a Phoenix suburb. For trip planning: the East Valley from Mesa through Chandler and Gilbert has significantly lower hotel rates than Scottsdale on most dates and better freeway access to Spring Training facilities on the east side of the metro.
