This is the Colorado most visitors never see — the vast, high, flat San Luis Valley ringed by the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan mountains, and the eastern plains rolling out toward Kansas. The headline draw is Great Sand Dunes National Park, where the tallest dunes in North America pile against the mountains and Medano Creek runs along their base in early summer. A jacuzzi inn near Alamosa or Mosca puts the dunes, the wildlife refuges, and the valley hot springs within easy reach, far from the resort crowds.
The valley has a quiet, offbeat character — alligator farms fed by geothermal water, the UFO watchtower on the highway, sandhill crane migrations in spring, and some of the darkest night skies in the country. It is a stargazing and slow-travel region, and a private hot tub under that sky is the whole point. The high plains to the east and southeast add ranch-country quiet and the occasional scenic surprise for travelers crossing the state.
Spring brings the sandhill crane migration through the valley and cool weather for the dunes before the sand heats up. Early summer is peak for Great Sand Dunes and Medano Creek. Fall is crisp and quiet with excellent stargazing, and winter is very still — a soak under a cold, clear, dark sky is the valley at its most memorable. Rates stay low year-round compared to the mountain resorts.
