Steamboat is a real Colorado ranching town that happens to have a world-class ski mountain, and that split personality is the appeal. The mountain is famous for Champagne Powder, the dry light snow that made the town a household name, and the base village is dense with condo properties where a private hot tub is close to standard — soak with the slopes in front of you after a powder day. Downtown, a few miles from the lifts along the Yampa River, keeps its working-town feel: brick Lincoln Avenue, saddle shops next to good restaurants, and inns with jetted tubs at gentler rates than slope-side.
The hot springs are the other half of the story. Steamboat is named for its natural mineral springs, and Strawberry Park Hot Springs — rustic stone pools in the forest north of town — is one of the great soaks in the state, especially under snow. Old Town Hot Springs sits right downtown. Between the natural springs and the in-room jacuzzis, this is arguably the best hot-water town in Colorado.
Winter is peak, and Christmas and Presidents Day weeks push slope-side jacuzzi units six to eight weeks out. January is the powder-value month. Summer is Steamboat quiet season and a genuine surprise: tubing the Yampa through town, the rodeo series, wildflower hiking, and hot-tub condos at half their winter rates. Fall brings gold aspen across the Yampa Valley and the year is lowest prices.
