Carlsbad is the primary base for Carlsbad Caverns National Park, about 20 miles south on US-62/180. The caverns are a serious cave system, the Big Room alone is 8.2 acres at 750 feet underground, and the park has 119 known caves total. The Bat Flight Program in summer draws significant crowds: around 400,000 Mexican free-tail bats emerge from the natural entrance at dusk from May through October, a spectacle that pulls visitors from across the Southwest. Hotel demand in Carlsbad spikes around bat season and summer school holidays. In-room jacuzzi options exist at mid-range prices year-round.
Roswell, 75 miles north of Carlsbad on US-285, runs on its alien crash mythology from 1947 and is genuinely good-natured about it. The International UFO Museum draws visitors who would otherwise have no reason to stop in a city of 49,000 people in southeastern New Mexico. Beyond the alien marketing, Roswell has a real agricultural economy (dairy, cattle, potash), a decent arts scene anchored by the Roswell Museum and Art Center, and Robert H. Goddard’s rocket research history, Goddard conducted much of his early rocketry work here in the 1930s. Hotel options are mid-range chain properties with some whirlpool suite availability.
Southeast New Mexico doesn’t get much tourist traffic compared to the northern part of the state, which keeps hotel rates low and availability high. If you’re planning a road trip through Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands, and Guadalupe Mountains National Park (just across the Texas line), this region is the geographic center. Guadalupe Mountains is 55 miles from Carlsbad and has the highest peak in Texas at 8,751 feet. The combination of three national parks (Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands, Guadalupe Mountains) within a 130-mile radius makes the region an underrated road trip base.
