Fort Myers Beach on Estero Island rebuilt energetically after Hurricane Ian and runs the region’s casual beach-town strip; Bonita Springs fills the resort corridor between; and Sanibel and Captiva islands remain the shelling capital of the western hemisphere — the ‘Sanibel stoop’ is the official posture of a barrier island whose east-west orientation nets Gulf shells like a catcher’s mitt. Marco Island, south of Naples, ends the road with high-rise Gulf resorts on a crescent beach and the Ten Thousand Islands’ mangrove maze beyond.
Behind everything sits the Everglades — Naples is the western gateway, and airboat country, Big Cypress, and Everglades City’s stone crab fleet are all under an hour. Season is sharply winter: December through April doubles rates and fills the Fifth Avenue reservation books, while summer runs hot, stormy, and half-price. Stone crab season (mid-October through May) is the region’s culinary calendar, and a claw dinner after a soak is the correct Naples evening.
