Crested Butte is what ski towns looked like before the corporations arrived — a Victorian coal town painted in candy colors at the end of a dead-end valley, with a mountain whose extreme terrain shaped American freeskiing and a self-awarded title, wildflower capital of Colorado, that July proves honest every year. The lodging splits between the historic town and the base village at Mount Crested Butte three miles up, where the condo inventory carries the private hot tubs. Gunnison, thirty miles down the valley, is the ranching-college town that serves as the airport and the value base, with Blue Mesa Reservoir — Colorado’s largest lake — just west.
Over Monarch Pass to the east, Salida runs the other kind of mountain-town economy: water. The Arkansas River through Browns Canyon National Monument is the most rafted whitewater in the country, and Salida’s historic district — one of Colorado’s largest — has rebuilt itself around outfitters, galleries, and the riverside park where a surf wave runs through downtown. Buena Vista, up the valley beneath the Collegiate Peaks (a straight line of 14,000-foot summits named Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Columbia), splits the rafting trade and adds its own riverfront district.
The soak infrastructure here is quietly first-rate. Mount Princeton Hot Springs, between Buena Vista and Salida, terraces its pools along Chalk Creek with hot water welling up through the creek gravel itself; Salida’s own aquatic center runs the largest indoor hot springs pool in the state; and Cottonwood Pass hot springs sit above Buena Vista. Summer is peak — rafting season crests in June — and September’s gold rides the aspen belts across all three valleys. Winter belongs to Crested Butte’s skiers and Monarch’s storm chasers, at prices the famous resorts stopped charging a decade ago.
