The San Juans are Colorado’s most dramatic range, and the towns wedged into them run on character the resort corridors can’t manufacture. Durango is the hub — a railroad town whose 1882 narrow-gauge steam line still runs the gorge to Silverton daily in season, one of the great train rides on the continent. Main Avenue keeps its Victorian hotel stock working, Purgatory resort covers the skiing 25 minutes north, and the Animas River runs whitewater straight through town. Mesa Verde National Park, 35 minutes west toward Cortez, holds the Cliff Palace and 600 other Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings — the densest archaeology in the country.
Telluride sits at the closed end of a box canyon with a 365-foot waterfall hanging over town, and its free gondola — the only free public-transit gondola in North America — links the historic district to the Mountain Village resort. The festival calendar (film in September, bluegrass in June) books the town solid on its own. Ouray, over the range on the Million Dollar Highway — the white-knuckle stretch of US 550 across Red Mountain Pass — calls itself the Switzerland of America and backs the claim with a town-run hot springs pool, a winter ice climbing park in a gorge at the edge of town, and lodging where the soak is the point.
Pagosa Springs closes the loop east with the deepest measured geothermal spring on record — the Guinness-certified Mother Spring feeds terraced pools stepping down to the San Juan River, and half the town’s hotels pipe the mineral water into their own soaking tubs. This is the corner of Colorado where a private jacuzzi and a natural hot spring live in the same itinerary every day of the trip. Summer and fall are peak — the train, the passes, and the festivals all run — while ski season keeps Telluride and Purgatory busy and turns Ouray’s ice park into a January destination of its own.
