The Roaring Fork Valley runs forty miles from Aspen down to Glenwood Springs, and it bookends the Colorado soak better than anywhere else in the state: private jacuzzi suites at the top of the valley, and the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool at the bottom. Aspen itself needs little introduction — four ski mountains (Ajax rising straight out of downtown, Highlands with its bowl, Buttermilk of X Games fame, and Snowmass), a Victorian mining-town core, and the most concentrated luxury hotel market in the Rockies. The Maroon Bells, ten miles out of town, are the most photographed mountains in North America.
Snowmass Village is where the valley’s ski-in jacuzzi inventory actually lives — it’s three times Ajax’s size on the snow, built as a condo resort, and the slope-side units with private tubs outnumber anything Aspen proper offers. Families and groups who want space default here. Basalt and Carbondale, mid-valley, have grown into real towns with their own restaurant scenes and gold-medal fly fishing on the Frying Pan River, at lodging rates far below Aspen’s.
Glenwood Springs anchors the downvalley end with the pool that started Colorado resort tourism: 400-plus feet of hot mineral water, open since 1888, fed by the Yampah spring. Iron Mountain Hot Springs added a modern terraced soaking facility on the Colorado River, and the Glenwood hotels put you two blocks from both at half of what mid-valley costs. Hanging Lake, the turquoise cliff-bowl lake up Glenwood Canyon, requires a permit and earns it. Winter drives the top of the valley; Glenwood runs strong all year — hot springs weather is any weather.
