Vail is the largest single ski mountain in the United States — 5,300 acres, with the famous Back Bowls spilling across seven miles of ridgeline — and the village at its base was purpose-built in the 1960s to look like the Alps. It works. Vail Village and Lionshead are pedestrian-only, heated-cobblestone resort districts where the hotel tier runs from lodge rooms to some of the most expensive suites in American skiing, and the private jacuzzi or oversized soaking tub is standard equipment at the top end.
Beaver Creek, ten miles west, is the quieter luxury sibling — escalators from the parking structure to the lifts, cookies handed out at the base at 3pm, and a slope-side village that runs even more exclusive than Vail. Between them, Avon sits on the valley floor as the practical base: real-world hotel pricing, five minutes from Beaver Creek’s gondola, fifteen from Vail. Eagle and Edwards extend the valley west with more value inventory, and the Eagle County airport lands winter flights direct from both coasts.
Peak weeks here are the most expensive lodging dates in Colorado — Christmas and Presidents Day suites at the top Vail properties clear $1,000 a night. The other end of the calendar is the secret: Vail’s summer is a full second season of alpine concerts, the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens (the highest botanical garden in North America), and hiking straight off the gondola, at rates less than half of winter. September, when the aspen turn and the crowds leave, might be the single best value week in the valley.
